February 20, (THEWILL) – Kano State Government has commenced the second phase of its livestock empowerment programme under the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project, targeting thousands of beneficiaries across the state.

The N2.3 billion initiative aims to support 671 beneficiaries with two bulls each, along with feeds for three months, veterinary drugs, and salt licks.

Additionally, 911 beneficiaries will receive two rams each under the scheme, while 2,386 women from low-income households will be provided with two does and a buck goat.

Addressing journalists in Kano on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, detailed the scope of the programme, highlighting the government’s commitment to livestock development and poverty alleviation.

According to Mahmoud, the government has procured 1,342 bulls at the cost of N560 million, 1,822 rams worth N175 million, and 7,158 goats valued at N451 million to support the programme.

“Under the cattle scheme, each bull is expected to gain an additional 100kg over a 120-day fattening period, making three fattening cycles possible within a year,” Mahmoud explained.

“For the small ruminants fattening scheme, each animal is projected to gain an extra 15kg within the same period. Additionally, the programme encourages goat reproduction among women, empowering them to raise and sell young goats to boost their household income,” he added.

The initiative is part of the state government’s broader efforts to enhance food security, improve livestock productivity, and empower rural communities.
