Chameleon Crawler
A small, opportunistic predator that typically gathers in small packs, the Chameleon Crawler has several tentacles around its mouth which are used as sensory organs for scent and touch. It likes to hide in vegetation, where its superior camouflage makes it very hard to spot.
The Chameleon Crawler’s most notable feature is its ability to alter the color and texture of its skin, comparable to Earth cuttlefishes. It uses this to disguise itself while sneaking up on a target, where it will stun or stupefy the prey by using hypnotic, strobe-like flashes. When faced with a larger threat, the pack will perform synchronized attacks from all directions to confound and destabilize their opponent, then blend into the background to disappear.
The Crawler’s soft skin is quite elastic, which allows it to increase its apparent size to intimidate other predators. Na’vi use this flexible skin in a variety of ways, from drum skins to weapon bindings. Culturally, the Na’vi regard the Chameleon Crawler’s hunting style of camouflage, stealth, and surprise group attacks as shining examples of excellent technique, and young hunters are taught to emulate it.
